Building a Trauma-Informed Community, One Relationship at a Time

At Kindred Hearts, we believe healing begins with connection—and few approaches reflect that belief more powerfully than Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®). That’s why we’re proud to share that our Wraparound Program Manager, Mike Bettes, has officially completed his TBRI® Practitioner Training through the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at TCU.

Mike now joins Executive Director Haley Bagnaschi as a certified TBRI® Practitioner, expanding our organization’s ability to deliver trauma-informed care across Shasta County and beyond.

What Is TBRI®?

TBRI® is an evidence-based model rooted in attachment, neuroscience, and child development. It was specifically created for children who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, or significant relational disruptions.

This approach gives adults practical, research-backed tools to connect with and support kids who need more than structure—they need understanding. And for many of the families we serve, it’s life-changing.

Why TBRI® Matters—Especially in Shasta County

The need for trauma-informed care isn’t just theoretical—it’s personal and local. According to the latest Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) data, Shasta County reports trauma rates well above the state average. These early experiences can impact everything from behavior and learning to physical health and lifelong outcomes.

TBRI® gives caregivers, teachers, and clinicians the tools to respond with empathy, not punishment. With understanding, not judgment. With connection, not control.

In a region where trauma is common, compassion must be too.

Turning Training into Action

We’re not just talking about trauma-informed care—we’re delivering it:

January: Partnered with Shasta County Office of Education to provide TBRI® Trauma-Informed Classroom training to educators and administrators
March: Offered the TBRI® Caregiver Training Series for Clinicians with a focus on school counselors
Today: Fielding new requests from Tehama County agencies eager to bring this work to their own communities
