Breaking the Cycle: A Call to Action for Our Community

Writer: Haley BagnaschiHaley Bagnaschi

I first heard Gaelin Elmore speak in July 2024, and his story has stayed with me ever since. It wasn’t just his words—it was the undeniable truth he carried about the impact of childhood adversity, the power of connection, and what’s possible when communities commit to real change.

At Kindred Hearts, we believe in upstream thinking—proactively addressing challenges before they become crises. Too often, families come to us when they are already overwhelmed, when behaviors have escalated, when support feels out of reach. But what if we didn’t wait? What if we invested in connection, healing, and education before families felt like they were drowning? What if we built systems of support strong enough to catch them before they fell?

This is what Gaelin Elmore speaks to so powerfully. As someone who experienced the foster care system firsthand, he doesn’t just talk about adversity—he talks about what it takes to prevent it. He challenges us to see our role, not just in responding to hardship, but in making sure fewer children and families reach that point in the first place.

We know that healing happens in the context of relationships. It happens when families have access to adoption-competent support, when kids feel seen and understood, when the community recognizes its responsibility in shaping the future of its most vulnerable members.

Gaelin is coming to speak at a time when our community needs this message more than ever. The families we serve are resilient, but they cannot do this alone. They need us—not just as professionals, but as neighbors, educators, mentors, and advocates. They need us to be willing to invest in the long game, to prioritize prevention over crisis response, to create a culture where every child has the stability, safety, and belonging they deserve.

So here’s our call to action:

  • Attend Gaelin Elmore’s keynote. Hear his story. Feel the urgency.

  • Get involved. Support families before they reach a breaking point.

  • Invest in upstream solutions. Whether through mentorship, advocacy, or resources, be part of the movement that stops the cycle before it starts.

The change we want to see doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when a community decides that it will no longer be reactive—it will be proactive. It happens when we choose to create a future where fewer children experience trauma, where fewer families feel alone, where belonging is a guarantee, not a question.

I hope you’ll join us.
