Surviving Summer & Easing into Back-to-School: A Love Letter to Adoptive Parents

Summer can feel like both a blessing and a marathon. For many families, it’s a season filled with sunshine, late bedtimes, sensory overload, sibling battles, and never-ending snacks. You’ve made it this far—deep breath, you’re not alone.

At Kindred Hearts, we know that survival mode is real. Many of the families we serve hit July running on fumes. Maybe routines have gone out the window, kids are dysregulated, and you’re just trying to get through each day. It’s okay. That doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human, and you’re parenting through the layered complexities that adoption often brings. You may have even spotted a staff kiddo or two hanging around the office this summer—because we’re parents too, and we get it.

The Science of Stress (and What Helps)

Research shows that chronic stress can take a toll on both children and adults, especially in families navigating trauma, attachment, and identity formation. But here’s the good news: science also tells us what helps.

The antidote to stress? Connection and community.

When we feel seen, supported, and safe in relationships—with our kids, our partners, our friends, our community—we are better able to regulate, recharge, and reset. Connection is not just a feel-good concept; it’s essential for healing and resilience.

Back-to-School Prep with Compassion

As the school year approaches, many adoptive families feel a mix of relief and anxiety. Transitions can be hard. New teachers, new routines, social pressures—these can be big triggers for our kids. Preparing for this season isn’t just about buying backpacks and filling out paperwork. It’s about helping our kids feel emotionally safe and helping ourselves feel supported.

Some ideas as you prepare:

  • Ease in slowly: Reestablish routines one piece at a time—bedtimes, mealtimes, wake-up rituals.

  • Talk it out: Use story-based tools or simple check-ins to help your child name their feelings about the new year.

  • Advocate early: If your child needs support at school, reach out to teachers or counselors now.

  • Fill your own cup: Seriously. You can’t pour from an empty one. Find your people.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

At Kindred Hearts, we walk alongside adoptive families in every season. We’re not just here when you’re in crisis or on the edge of burnout. We’re also here for the everyday victories—when your child makes a friend, sleeps through the night, or finally lets their guard down and laughs from their belly. These moments matter, and we want to celebrate them with you.

So whether you’re holding it together with coffee and granola bars, or finally getting a little breathing room, know this:

You are not alone. You are not invisible. And you were never meant to do this in isolation.

Find Your Community

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back to stress. Let it be a fresh start—for your kids and for you.

We see you. We’re with you. And we’re so glad you’re here.
